Creating a fabricusing a modifier Cloth

This lesson assists youin constructing outlines of textile on the board with the help of 3DS Max. For this purpose we have a 3D model of the table, on which it’s necessary to cover the tablecloth. The board doesn’t have to be round, we can take anyone.

At first, we create a square plane.

At the current stage, enter chosenparameters, they can vary. In Lengths Segs, for example, it’s 25, the same number in Width Segs. You can enter the same values, but you don’t need to compose too many segments, because later we’llexploit the Turbosmooth modifier.

Place the flat over the board and elect the modifier Turbosmooth from the modifier roster. In its configurations, put the value of the parameter Iterations to 2, this will be enough. Or, if you want to achieve better property, enter 3 or 4, if necessary. Also slightly lessen the scale of the plane. The amount of polygons won’t decrease.

Add the Cloth modifier to the chosen plane, selecting it from the roster of modifiers 3d max. Choose Object Properties in the submenu.

A small window appears. In the left part of the casement there’s a roster with all the objects in the stage interacting in the operation of rendering the fabric with the Cloth modifier. At the moment, only the tablecloth interacts («plane01»). Push Add Object knob and add the model of the table («Line01»). If you’ve just started to study 3d max and the names of the objects you don’t match, don’t panic, it’s OK.

Now both objects must be in the roster. We’ll start with the tablecloth. Elect the tablecloth from the roster and elect the checkbox «Cloth». Then, in Presets, embrace the fabric matter the tablecloth model should be made of, or if you want, you can create your own fabric matter yourself. You just need to play around with the configurations a little and you’ll grasp the purpose of each setting and their functions. We chose the type of Flannel material.

Then we go to the table model. Simply elect the board in the list, tick Collision checkbox, and push OK.In the right menu, press Simulate knob. If the outcome isn’t satisfying, click Erase Simulation knob and change the configurations.

These were the basics of working with the Cloth modifier to create a textile in 3d max.
